DoC announces May 2024 Crypt Sessions

My unparalleled urban undertakers,

We’ll be lowering the coffin lid on another Crypt season with four stellar shows in May, starting with the Miró Quartet on May 4, who will be performing a sublime program that centers around Caroline Shaw’s sci-fi inspired Microfictions [vol. 1], along with Barber’s transcendent Adagio for Strings, George Walker’s heartbreaking Lyric for Strings, and a movement from Kevin Puts’s Home.

Then we’ll follow that with a three-concert mini-series, entitled The Ghosts of Gotham, presented in collaboration with our surface-dwelling friends at Concert Artists Guild. The series begins on May 8 with the award-winning Dior String Quartet leading us on a musical exploration of New York City’s compositional voices across the ages, with works by Korean-born composer Soo Yeon Lyuh, NYC local Robert Paterson, and an obscure Czech named Antonín Dvořák (trust us— this kid is going places). Then on May 15, bassoonist/vocalist Eleni Katz and pianist/composer Llewellyn Sánchez-Werner perform Sound & Silence, a program inspired by the rhythms and rests of NYC, as filtered through works by the giants of yesteryear (Bernstein, Copland, and Gershwin) as well as voices of today like Cindi Hsu, Lila Meretzky, Jeff Scott, and Llewellyn Sánchez-Werner himself. On May 17, join us for the season’s final descent into the Cryptic depths for What Remains. Performed by the cutting-edge Green Room Ensemble, led by co-founder and violinist Nathan Meltzer, this program curates a selection of works that traces the echoes of memory that are retained within every cornerstone, monument, and final resting place across this timeless city of ours.
