Our annual holiday tradition continues, welcoming the extraordinary talents of Ekmeles to the Crypt to perform David Lang's indescribably powerful, Pulitzer-winning work The Little Match Girl Passion.
The previous two runs both sold out well in advance, and garnered awestruck acclaim from audiences and critics alike, with the performances praised as "magical" (OperaWire), "timeless" (BroadwayWorld), "deeply affecting" (Interludes), and – we love this – a "rare, impossibly cool experience that makes us think about the human condition during a time of year that often lets corporations take center stage" (Plays to See).
Lang's singular choral work tells one of the darkest, most deeply human stories of hope and suffering ever put to paper. Taking Hans Christian Andersen's bleak fairy tale about a poor girl freezing to death on New Year's Eve, and fusing it with Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Lang creates a wrenching expression of empathy, and a reminder that every life matters, and every act of kindness is an act of grace.
We love a good "Nutcracker" and "Messiah" as much as the next crypt-dweller, but if you want to truly get into the holiday spirit, allow us to offer you this annual tear-stained cry into the night... full of hope, sorrow, love, and awe at the fragile preciousness of life.

Ekmeles is a vocal ensemble dedicated to the performance of new and rarely-heard works, and gems of the historical avant garde. They have a special focus on microtonal works, and have been praised for their “extraordinary sense of pitch” by the New York Times. They are the recipients of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation’s 2023 Ensemble Prize, the first American group to receive the honor.
